The Contacts field is actually looking for the RecordID of the Contact not the name.

Activities: Contacts and Entitiy
Opportunities: Contacts and Customer

You will also have to make sure you have a value for all the required fields. The best way to do this is to view the table and look for all the fields that have required checked (Customize > Tables / Fields)

I exported a contact list and used the exact export to re-import having changed only the first and last name. This way and I can see if this test contact will associated with the right customer/lead. Entity, of course, matches the Entity I'm trying to add a contact to. Other irrelevant fields were marked as "do not import". Here is the error message I got:

Error:We couldn't update current record because we couldn't find a single unique parameter that will match your update criteria.

Re: problems importing contact

swm023-

The field that links a contact to a Customer/Lead (Also known as an entity) is the Entity drop down.

Make sure you have a value for Entity for all your contacts which should be the value of the FullName field for the customer you are trying to link the contact to.

I imported a test file and plugged in the corresponding entityrecordid and entity_recordid numbers. I can't see the contacts anywhere in method. However, I just did an export of all my contacts and they appear on the csv file. Other imports attempts I've tried that don't show up even on the csv export after having supposedly imported "successfully".

What am I doing wrong? I started with an export so that I would have a template but can't seem to get things working correctly. Please help.
