I eneded up fixing this. Not sure how or why but a setting in my google gadget had changed. I went in and changed and all is well.

I think I've finally solved this. If you add the tag as the first part of the action result, then at the very end of the action result string, add another ending tag, then it should work. Just to add some information, this is the default portal which apparently pulls from the Contacts table.
I just read a thread talking about the "older" Customer Portal vs. new Contacts Portal. Not sure if that matters with what you were imagining and how everything should be setup.

The AutoGrow feature would normally take care of this for a read-only grid, however, since this is a grid that needs to be editable in order to add items to it, this won't work.
