To make things easy, what's stopping you from using the retrieving for the field you are actually looking for? Using the Customer table as an example:
i.e. if you want the actual text value of the CustomerType (drop down field) than retrieve that field
or...
if you want the record ID of that value use CustomerType_RecordID

By the way, I can imagine a setup for "custom" emails where I add a text field that a salesperson can write a personal message into, then use a merge field to stick that at the end of a email template. But before I resort to that, I'd like to know if I have the option for more precise control and editing of the email itself.

I've used numerous check boxes as part of a customer application process that employees fill in. With a default of unchecked (or no) I never knew whether the employees had actually considered that field or not, and have now switched to a dropdown with Yes, No, or blank choices(default is blank). The fact that the error message comes up upon closing the window makes me think it's tied to the "onClosePopup" trigger event (which can be found in Step 2 after clicking the "Advanced..." button that is in the "Insert Fields and Objects" section on your customization screen)
