For the import, have you selected "Update existing records by matching the key fields"?  If so, you need to have something to signify what record to update.  Typically, if you have "Update existing records by matching the key fields" selected, you need to include the RecordID column ...

    I am using the import function. I am using importing to a Contacts table. I have tried the copy/paste funtion and also uploading a csv file and get errors eitiher way.  the only time the import function has worked for me was when I used a Customer table but I definitely do not want to upload to a Customer table - just a contacts ...

    Katie, Only stages that have the category of "Open" will appear in the pipeline.  Selecting stages with a category of "Closed Won" vs. "Closed Lost" really only affect reports you wish to generate down the road.  For example, if you wanted to run a report for all the opportunities you lost in ...

    The closed stage selected is "Closed Won". Does it have to be set to "Closed Lost" to move the opportunity out of the pipeline?

I think you are filtering by the wrong field, you should probably be creating your filters based on the OpportunityStage field and not the OpportunityStageCategory field. For OpportunityStageCategory there only only 3 options 'Closed Won', 'Closed ...
