No, we are just entering one record and I have a save and close button.  It saves the section and closes the window.  At all times they see the customer filled in, but when they save & close, it doesn't actually save that one particular field.

mlepitt- By any chance in that child screen are the users entering multiple records at once? If they are, are they clicking Save & New (Or similar button)? On initially loading the child screen the value will be entered but if they click Save & New it would clear out the value in the drop down. If that's the case you could ...
