It turns out this issue is more wide spread than I thought.  It is also happening with contacts, where it appears to save, but it doens't actually save the customer so it is a detached contact.  The issue only started appearing 10/21, which is about when I created that custom table.

I was able to implement as you suggested but ran into a bug.  We have items that have a "+" in their name and would not work for the grid filter where the Assembly Item = the Item Group or Assembly List Item Name.  I had to add a hidden Assembly Item Record ID onto the screen and use that instead.  So, reported bug appears ...

No, we are just entering one record and I have a save and close button.  It saves the section and closes the window.  At all times they see the customer filled in, but when they save & close, it doesn't actually save that one particular field.
