My apologies for the late reply. I believe you will need to modify the sort order of the detail line within the report.
Just change the RecordID field to your custom sort order field. And as always, we recommend that you create a copy of the report before making any changes. I hope this helps.

For the most part... Yes...if tracking for a particular contact associated with customer then use contacts.
