I am trying to autopopulate the "Contact Name*" field (the Name field) on my "New Contact" screen with the company name based on selecting "Main Account" as an option in the Job Type dropdown.

First, I tried to use various fields from the screen and none of them are populated in the Contact Name* field. There is also a shared result that called resultParentFullName that is generated from the Customer screen when the "New Contact" button is pressed, but that is assigned to an action result and then blanked out. So it doesn't appear to be unavailable either.

When autopopulating the Contact Name* field, I've tried to select "Value from Screen" and nothing happens, and "Value From Row" gives me an error.

Your advice is much appreciated.

If I understand correctly, you're trying to update a field based on a selection you made in a dropdown on the screen?

To start, you could use the Enter Value into Field on Screen action on the dropdown field. If you make the event Text Change then it will trigger the action when you change the value of the dropdown field. In the action, you could use Value from Screen if you want the text field to mimic the dropdown. If you want to use Value from Row, you'll have to put the action inside of Start/End Loop Through Table actions.
