Method Community

I would like method to autogenerate unique account numbers for my customers, then sync those with the account number field in QuickBooks. I tried turning on the unique attribute for the accountnumber field in method.  It says that it is Disabled because it already contains records.  What are my options?  We are just setting up, so ...
