I pulled out the master page and the code does work. The issue is around ASP.net master/content pages calling Java.

The only code on my test page (other than the copy/paste from the code generator) is the Master Page. I can't imagine that causing any problems because those are practically everywhere. Are you testing this in a dot.net environment. I'm using code-behind pages. Are there any pieces of this copy/paste ...
