If I do this as a result of an action (say, emulating the Duplicate feature found in Quickbooks for a given transaction), and I have Method set to assign the Refnum numbers for these transactions when passing to QB, does Method still assign the Refnum?

I've had no trouble adding a grid for each LineItem table associated with an Inventory Item in our Inventory Item screen. I can show Purchase Orders, Item Receipts, Bills, Estimates, Sales Orders, and Invoices relevant to a given Inventory Item all in their own grid without a problem.

What I'd really like to do is basically something like a union query, where I can pull all of these into a single grid using custom SQL statements. We can use custom SQL elsewhere in Method.

Is this something that's in the hopper for v2? It would be immensely useful for companies that deal with physical inventory.

Thanks,

We'd really love to be able to have our service guys be able to visit customers with an iPad or other tablet, while working create a Sales Order, and then be able to capture the customer's signature on the iPad as confirmation that they accept the work documented in the Sales Order before we leave their site and invoice them.

Is a drawing input object, or something that would facilitate the above, something in the hopper for v2?

I realize we could build an iPad app that captures that and syncs to Method via the API, but if there was something a straightforward as a drawing input object, you'd truly save us (and many others) countless hours and dollars and be our best friends for life. :)

Yeah, so it turns out my users were not being completely upfront about what they were actually doing in Quickbooks (despite having some very convincing screenshots). This is definitely a situation where they are trying to convert an Item Receipt into a Bill.

Since that's not supported by the SDK and I'm a little worried that trying to simulate this action in Method will just mess up a balance somewhere, I'm having one of our few QB people handle those going forward.

Thanks for the assistance!

Re: Bill against a P.O. that has already been received in an Item Receipt

Ok I suspect what's happening is that the business user is giving me bad information on what they were doing in Quickbooks.

I should be trying to emulate this functionality:

http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/enter-a-bill-if-you-have-recorded-an-item-receipt0.html

I'm going to confirm some stuff and probably proceed on this basis.

Re: Bill against a P.O. that has already been received in an Item Receipt

I don't think this is a conversion thing.

If I'm creating a bill, I can associate it with a Purchase Order. When I do this and the items have not been previously received, the items are received now.

This is a situation where we created a PO and sent it to a vendor, and the vendor sent us the items on the PO, but not the bill (yet). In order for us to facililate the invoicing of those items without getting into negative stock messiness, we need to receive the items into our inventory regardless of whether we have a bill or not.

So, we create the Item Receipt and associate it with a PO. This receives the items into our inventory without creating a bill.

Later on, we will receive a bill. So we have to create a bill and link it to a PO. That's fine, the basic functionality is there, but I can't see POs that have their items already received as an Item Receipt.

We don't want the items to be received again of course, until we create a bill the Accounts Payable gl won't get hit; Items receipts just receive the items, there's no AP impact.

This is along the same lines as what was discussed in this thread:

http://method.me/cs/forums/p/3268/12481.aspx#12481

Logically, if we send out a PO to a supplier, there must be a bill at some point later on that we can tie to that PO, regardless of whether that PO's items get received; somebody has to pay for them at some time.

Re: LinkToSalesOrder

In the Loop Through Grid, after the InvoiceLine has been created, I'd create the relationship table record based on the SalesOrderLine RecordID and the InvoiceLine RecordID.

But like I mentioned, that would only sort of get me there because when creating a fully custom table I can't define relationships in there with other tables, no referential integrity.

I think what I'm going to have to do, since I can't put real lookup fields in a grid which is what I'd need to do otherwise, is abandon the idea of referential integrity. Create two new fields in InvoiceLine: one for the SalesOrderLine RecordID, just so I can see a real flow if I want to, and one for the SalesOrder PONumber. Get the PO number before the CreateInvoice screen pops up, get the SalesOrderLine RecordID when I'm traversing the grid in the CreateInvoice screen and insert both of those data into the InvoiceLine table when the InvoiceLine records are being created.

Doing that will also mean I'll need to setup some kind of additional constraint around actions related to the PONumber field in the Sales Order screen; if someone changes the contents of that field after the InvoiceLine records are created, when the Sales Order is saved should it cascade that change to the InvoiceLine records? Or should that change be something the user is notified of when they enter an already saved Invoice where the Sales Order corresponding to the InvoiceLine records in that invoice no longer has the same "InvoiceLinePONumber" as the Sales Order PONumber?

Some things I'll have to consider.

Re: LinkToSalesOrder

Hi Greg,

Ok, that makes sense. Although since I can add stuff to pretty much any other table on the Method side for Method's exclusive use maybe the ability to do the same with the LinkToSalesOrder "entity" will be available in the future?

I guess in the meantime I can either:

1) Add a custom field to InvoiceLine which has the Sales Order RecordID if someone creates an Invoice from a Sales Order, or;

2) Create a custom table that has the InvoiceLine RecordID and the SalesOrderLine RecordID to create the relationship, and have a new row added whenever an Invoice is created by a Sales Order.

Ideally I'd want to go with Option 2 but it doesn't appear as though I can actually specify a link with an existing table in a new table. Is that correct? Is that functionality going to be rolled out?

One screen has the grid set to be editable, the other one just read only. Put the read-only screen in a tab associated with the user role that most people are part of, and put the editable screen in a tab associated with a different user role that fewer people (like just the editor) are a part of.

I don't think you can do per-control security unless you were to do some more complex conditional visibility, which I haven't personally tried out yet but would definitely be more difficult to implement than the above.
