  • New: Picture Objects capable of Actions

When pictures are used tactfully in applications, a designer can enhance a user’s experience and in many cases make it easier to navigate.  Up until now, you were able to add pictures to Method screens but that was where it stopped.  Not anymore.

Actions being assigned to images in the upcoming Method Expense Report App

Picture objects in Method now have the ability to have actions assigned to them, just like other objects can.  So what’s the big deal?  As the lead geek in the new Method Expense Report app (currently being beta tested by Method Solution Providers), I ran into a wall when I wanted to use images instead of traditional buttons on a welcome screen for the new app.  Yes, I could have used images and placed buttons at the bottom of each image, but to be honest, it didn’t look good and I’m all about the details.  I wanted to make the image the button and make it so the user just had to click the image to be taken to where I want them to go.  Since actions can now be directly assigned to images, a developer can choose to perform any sequence of events they choose when the “click” event happens on an image.

  • NEW Method Edition Videos!

If you visited our website in the past day or so, you might have noticed something new... perhaps something exciting that caught your eye.   If you have no clue what I am talking about, then you’ll definitely want to check out the “Tour” pages to see our 3 brand spanking new Method Edition videos!  You’ll notice that these videos make each edition’s key features stand out, making it much easier to understand Method’s capabilities in a short period of time, which is key since Method is capable of so much!

     Method Video Screenshot

Although it might seem like a simple task, these videos took a surprising amount of time and effort to perfect.  From searching for video companies to work with, to technical blunders, I’m going to provide a short recap on what was involved in our video-making journey.

Way back in – oh man, so long ago I don’t even want to tell you – January, we decided that we wanted to create some Method videos to place on the website, to make edition features more easy to understand.  We love watching feature videos for other products, so we figured that our site visitors would agree and would appreciate some short videos on Method.  And so, the hunt for a video production company began...

Key West Video LogoAfter gathering proposals and comparing companies, Key West Video won us over by a landslide.  Not only did they provide a competitive estimate, but they also provided fantastic samples AND even created a mini method clip using shots and information from our website (talk about going above and beyond!).  After meeting with them in person I was confident that Key West Video was the company to make the magic happen.

To make a long story short, I’m going to touch on 3 the easiest and the 3 most challenging aspects of the video production process (and some were surprising).  I’d have to say that the easiest parts were:

    1. Finding the right production company (Key West’s enthusiasm was outstanding)
    2. Finding the style of video we wanted (after visiting other websites, it became clear that we wanted a casual, to the point, features-style)
    3. Finding the voice talent (Key West provided voice demos for us to listen to)

On the contrary, I’d have to say that the three most difficult parts were:

    1. Putting together concise scripts that hit on major features without making it the length of a short film Wink

     Revised Video Scipt

    2. Selecting music (have you ever noticed that these movies usually use more than one music track, and how important it is to set the mood and  keep people excited?)
    3. Getting the videos into a compatible format that would enable video play from anywhere (even if it meant sacrificing image quality for download time)

Needless to say, this project threw me for some loops along the way, BUT, in the end, all the effort that was put forth by both the Method Team and Key West was definitely worth it, because we couldn’t be happier with the end product.  I think you’ll agree that these videos are a great way to learn about Method’s capabilities in a short 3 minute’s time (or so), so please take a moment to view them for yourself:

  • Learn the Method Lingo

Everyone’s heard of office “lingo” before.  You know those words that are thrown around the office, which no one but the people who work there actually understand.  How annoying has it been as an outsider, sitting on the other end of the fence, trying to decipher the “secret code” or language others are speaking. Loads of fun, isn’t it?  According to dictionary.com, “lingo” is:

The language and speech, esp. the jargon, slang, or argot, of a particular field, group, or individual.

The Method team is just as guilty of this.  Most recently I had Judy Syms (a MCAM) email me saying “Danny, what’s a BSC?”  I used the term freely in an email to her and it dawned on me at that very minute that I was guilty of using “internal lingo”.  To help our fellow MSP’s and Method Community, I’ve asked the Method Team to help me build a list of the most common terms you’ll hear us use in various communications.

Terms the Method Team and I commonly use:

“BSC” – Business  Systems Consultants are the direct point of contact for Method clients and assist in the customization of Method to fit their unique business needs.

“MSP” – Method Solution Providers are an extension of the Method Team and consist of MCC’s and MCAM’s.

“MCC” – Method Certified Consultants are members of the MSP community and provide value added services through local training, implementation and customization services.  They are also required to pass an exam to maintain this designation.

“MCAM” – Method Certified Account Managers are members of the MSP community and are also resellers of Method.  Similar to a BSC, a MCAM is the direct point of contact for any client who registers through a MCAM.

“ProAdvisor” – ProAdvisors are independent CPA’s, accountants, bookkeepers, computer consultants and trainers who work with small businesses and who have completed a rigorous and comprehensive QuickBooks curriculum developed by Intuit.

“ISP” – Intuit Solution Providers have expertise in technology and solutions integration for small-to-medium sized businesses. They are authorized to resell, implement, and support QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions, Intuit QuickBase, and other Intuit and third-party products.

“SNH” – Scaling New Heights is a yearly conference conducted by Joe Woodard, focused on Intuit products and other third-party applications, which Joe uses in his own practice.  This includes Method, of course.

“NAN” – National Advisor Network is a professional group of experienced and highly knowledgeable Intuit Advisors (i.e. QuickBooks ProAdvisors and Intuit Solution Providers).

“SGN” – The Sleeter Group Network is a kcommunity of experts who provide consulting services to small business owners in the accounting software and business process design areas.

Terms from our head geek – Manish:

“Agile” – is a software development methodology based on iterative and incremental development process.

“Scrum” – is an “Agile” approach to software development. The word came from Rugby game, where team hisses and discusses the strategy quickly during the opening bell.

“Sprint” – are the monthly builds/releases.

“SaaS” – Software as a Service is software that is deployed over the internet and/or is deployed to run behind a firewall. Also known as “software on demand”.

Terms from our fearless leader – Paul:

“Branch” – Essentially, this is our “next” version of Method.  After we publish the latest awesome new features and improvements... we start our geeky coding process all over again!  We create a copy of the source code and start ripping it up with the new feature requests we have planned.  It will take the full 4 week “Sprint” before the code written on the branch is ready to go live.

“Trunk” – In short, this is the “current” version of Method.  Whenever we publish the “branch” code to the live site, it is frozen and is named as the “trunk” version.  We don’t add any features here, we just keep it stable in case we need to do a minor hot fix while the team pours all their energy into coding the next version on the branch.

So there you have it.  You can print a quick reference card if you like and put it next to your desk, if that helps.  Cool

  • Method attending the Intuit Solution Provider Summit 2010

The Intuit Solution Provider Summit is less than 4 months away and we are thrilled to be exhibiting at the conference once again this year!  The 2010 ISP Summit will be held in Los Angeles, California at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza hotel, from October 4-7, 2010.  I’m sure past attendees will agree, that if you’re an ISP, you will certainly enjoy this conference.

The theme of the 2010 Summit is “Charting a Course to Success”, focusing on business and innovation, while showcasing powerful customer solutions.   We’re excited to contribute to the summit by educating ISP’s about Method’s innovative abilities, which can play a considerable role in this course to success.

Last year we came face-to-face with many Method Solution Providers at the Summit, and also welcomed new MSP’s on board, so we’re already looking forward to the mix of familiar and fresh faces we’ll get to see in October.

Join us at the ISP Summit 2010 in LA, at an event that never seems to disappoint.  We’d love for you to come by our booth and say hello to the Method Team.  If you’re already “in the know” about Method, or are an MSP, we look forward to discussing our latest developments and receiving your feedback.  If you have never heard about Method before, please take this opportunity to check Method out and ask other ISP’s about their feedback on the product.

The 2010 ISP Summit will be a great learning and networking opportunity, so we hope to see you there!

  • Actions and Objects Reference Guides – Now available

Actions and Objects are the meat and potatoes when looking at how any Method screen is built.  The new Actions and Objects Reference Guides provide you with:

    • A detailed description of each action/object
    • An example of where you would use the action/object
    • Steps for adding the action/object

This is the perfect accessory when designing any screen and aren’t too sure what a specific action or object is supposed to do, or how to implement it.  As more actions and objects are released, we will try our best to keep this document up to speed.

You can view or print these documents by visiting our Self Service & Documentation section of the Method website.

  • Empower yourself by attending Method Solution Provider University

Starting this month, school bells will be ringing with the opening of the Method Solution Provider University (MSPU), presented by none other than Joe Woodard.  Now if you haven’t heard, we had a packed house at the Scaling New Heights Conference last month and one thing we know for sure is that consultants are serious about expanding their knowledge in Method.  We had over 150 attendees attend the level 1 certification training during the three-day conference and over 50 take the exam onsite.  I want to throw a shout out to Susan Cook from Account Ability for being the first to pass the Method Certified Consultant exam for 2010!

I couldn’t be more thrilled about MSPU starting this month.   As a consultant, this is a no-brainer, seeing as you are now given the tools and education to take your practice to the next level.  You can visit the MSPU by clicking here.  When I spoke to Joe about this over the last few weeks, here were his thoughts:

“I believe Method has real game changing potential within the QuickBooks community. Method has certainly changed the way we provide consulting for our clients. Sales of Method consulting and software over our first 12 months is just under $100k, and the opportunities keep coming. As charter members of the Method Solution Provider program we are thrilled to be working with Method to provide training for other MSPs - through both our annual conference called "Scaling New Heights" and through the newly formed Method Solution Provider University. The consulting opportunity around Method is tremendous, and through our partnership with Method we will empower countless QuickBooks consultants to expand their professional expertise, to provide powerful results for their clients who use QuickBooks, and to grow their practices.”

MSPU has options that can work for you depending on your schedule, budget and level of involvement.   Level 2 boot camp classes are limited in size and those who attended the Scaling New Heights Conference got first dibs on enrolment.  If you’re interested in getting in, sign up for classes today!

P.S. I’ll also be making my way around some of the Level 2 boot camps across the country, so stay tuned for further updates.

    Cheers,

    Danny
