What is the purpose of the next step field on an opportunity?

Wouldn't activities determine the next step?

    Hey Mahlon,

The next step field is standard field in most CRMs to provide a quick way for a sales manager to see the next step to close this deal. Very much a sales focused feature to keep the sales team constantly asking the next thing they need to do to close this opportunity. Activities is more for externally communicating with customers and the next step/opportunities is more internally used.

OK, makes sense. It's another way to work.

My clients always keep the next step on the followup activity. We customized to let them update comments when scheduling a followup. That way from the activity list they can see exactly what needs to be done to keep things moving forward.

So basically it's just a text box that is not updating from anywhere else, right?

    Hey Mahlon,

That is correct with the text box.
