Take a look at the Print Before scripts on the Qty and Cost fields on the Estimate (Custom) template. This should give you a better idea of what you need to do.

I found a fix for the problem incase anyone else encounters it. I'm not sure why it fixed the problem, but it did.

What you need to do before going into the screen edit, go to Customize-->Tables. Edit the table to which you want to add the linked field. The wizard will prompt you as to how to add the field.
