Cannot save Contact List as it has already been published. Please make a copy of this screen instead.

Talk about non-intuitive, one would think at least an option would come up - "Do you want to make a copy now?"

Although even better would simply be to let me save my changes, like any normal application. If I want to go back to the original, a "reset all changes" could be added. This is basic plumbing.

In fact, how do you even make a "copy of this screen" that I can make changes to?

Well, maybe I'm being too harsh. I got into this situation by simply clicking on the Gear while in contacts and trying to edit straight away. I guess the proper way to edit is via "Manage Apps".

However, it could have told me this, or given me some options.

Ok, so I managed to make a copy, and even make some changes. However, when I tried to go back and make more changes to my copy, I get the dreaded

"Cannot save Contact List as it has already been published.  Please make a copy of this screen instead."

Now I'm totally confused. Do I need to make a copy of the copy? This seems very strange.

    Hello cenesdelavega,

I haven't seen an option to copy out a default screen while going to Gear -> Customize Screen.  If you go to Manage Apps -> Edit Apps and find the screen you want to copy.  It will create a redirect on the screen to your copied screen.  You can see the red lettering on the screen.  It tells you what screen people are directed to.  This screen should also be in the list of screens.

In the example below, you can see I copied my Invoice List screen and I am using Copy3 Invoice List.   When you refresh the app and go to the screen you can click the Customize Screen button and customized the copied screen.  Also, you can click Customize in the Screen menu to do customization as well.

Two things to note, you can navigate easily between the screen designer and the app in the Currently Open menu.  Second, in the Versions menu from the Screens page, you can see if it is live for you or for all users by clicking Status on the screen box.

I'm going to put this in as a feature request.  Either some warning that you can't save customizations when going to the screen designer from a default screen (You are actually in override mode) or an ability to copy a screen from the screen designer.  I hit the same wall when learning Method:New.

    Hello,

I did get more word on this post and copying screens.  There are three modes, design, override and publish. The override mode is still in development and hasn't been fully flushed out yet.  For the beta, you will have to manually copy the screens from the Manage Apps section.  There are plans to make copying of default screens easier and provide a message warning you that you are in override mode.          Here is a snippet of the customization documentation p45 as of Nov 20th.  The customization notes do get changed due the nature of betas, new features and fixes.  I have been told customers who have yet to get the customization documentation for Method:New will receive a copy soon.

Just above the Menu bar, you’ll see the name of the screen you are editing. Beside the screen name you’ll see one of three notations:
design mode, override mode, or published. Here’s what they mean.

Design mode : This means the screen is ready to be customized. It hasn’t been published (made live) in the past, and you’re ok to start making changes to the screen.

Override mode: You’ll usually see this if you’re working on a Method - designed (stock) screen likely from an app you are not the developer of. Override mode lets you put additional layers of customization on top of the existing apps - basically this means you can’t change the core functionalit y of the screen, but you can change how it looks aesthetically and add additional functionality in addit ion to what is currently there.

Published : This screen is published and can no longer be customized unless you create a new version of the screen (see Screens for more details).
