How to display multiple lines of a "sub" grid when using Report Designer

I have a grid on my screen which allows me to enter multiple lines of data for a particular record.  However, when I display that "field" in the Report Designer I only see the first record of the grid.  I designated the "sub" grids as detail tables when creating the report.  The field that I am having a problem with is the field in the detail table which contains the multiple entries for my main grid.

    James,

Have you taken a look at our webinars on Method Report Designer?

The key thing to remeber when using 'sub' tables is to make sure you drag the fields into the detail band and that the detail band is bound to the correct table. Also when dragging a field from a detail table make sure you are selecting it from within the main table and not from its own table. For example if you look at the SalesOrder report you will see 2 tables listed on the top right one for SalesOrder and one for SalesOrder line but if you open up the SalesOrder table you will actually see the SalesOrderLine table within the SalesOrder table, when working with detail reports make sure you select the fields that are within the sub table found within the Main table.

Thanks for suggesting the webinars.  The first one appears to answer my question.  However, it does not jive with what you suggest.

Per the webinar, I am able to accomplish what I need by using Insert Detail Report.  One question on this - am I able to break my Main Detail section with a Detail Report and then continue with my Main Detail section?  It seems to me that I cannot; that inserting a Detail Report automatically forces the Detail Report to the bottom of the screen.

Per your instruction, it sounds like you are saying that I can insert the field and see all records as long as I pull the field as a descendant of the Main Table.  Ths is not working for me.  When I pull the field as described, I only get the first record; not all of the records from the Line table for the corresponding record.

    Answer

    JamesQ,

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Are you draging the fields into the Detail band within the Detail Report? Since you are working on a report based off the SalesOrder table have you tried making a copy of the Sales Order (Custom) report and start making changes based off of that?

Re: How to display multiple lines of a "sub" grid when using Report Designer

I have not tried to copy and edit the Sales Order report.  The problem is that I am making a "Sales Order," but our Sales Order is more like a Statement of Services or a Work Order, and not a Sales Order like the report which exists.  However, the Sales Order (Custom) report can be illustrative.  In your report, the DetailReport with SalesOrderLine is the last thing on the report (other than the footer.  It appears that when you instert a Detail Report, you effectlively end the Main Detail because you cannot have fields on the Main Detail which fall after the Detail Report.

Here is a diagram of what I am trying to accomplish (tables and relationships are on left, structure or report is on the right).  My Table has three sub-tables.  One is a Text field, two are Dropdowns (not that this matters).  This allows a user to enter any number of Summary Lines.  For example, we may want to enter:

    1. Rush order, deliver by MM/DD/YYYY

    2. Must ship via FedEx, no UPS

    3. Deliver data on encrypted DVD

These entries may number 10 or 20 possibly.

Likewise the two tables that hold which metadata fields are being delivered.  Each project might require delivery of one, two, or up to twenty metadata fields.  These fields are stored in another table.

As you can see from the diagram, I need to enter data on the Main Detail which will display after I insert my first Detail Report.  Then I will insert a few more Detail Reports, and then I want to continue to insert data on the Main Detail.

    James,

I think the answer here may be group footers.

    Report Designer:

    Sample Output:

Blue text is from the Master Table(SalesOrder) and the Company table.

Red Text is from the SalesOrderLine detail table

Green text is from the SalesOrderEmailData detail table.

Hope this helps, if you are still stuck I am going to suggestion booking some paid consulting time with me.
