Method Community

I'm trying to load pictures on to screens without having them saved on the method servers.  I thought there was a way to just use a link to my photos (on my computer) and have them load when the screen opens, but can't seem to find that.

I've tried using the "load web page" action with the url from a separate field, and this work for web addresses, but not for files on my computer (ie.  file:///c:...) although that works fine on my web browser.  Instead, I get a 'bad request' error.

Any help would be appreciated by this newbie method user.

Hi Michael,

I normally use Firefox, but also tried this with explorer.  I have the same problem on both. Additionally, with explorer, I get a "compatibility mode warning" on both a windows 7 machine, and on windows XP, although I'm not using that on either.

 On another matter, I understand this is a new version of  Method CRM being used now.  I'm getting some quirky behavior on other things, such as tab links for example, and am wondering if you want to be made aware of things like that?

It just occured to me that since Method is running on your server, a file local to our computer would not be accessible from your server, unless we were running a server ourselves and the file were available to anyone on the web.

Does this sound right?  And if so, any thoughts on addressing  my picture issue other than hosting them on my own webpage?

With IE compatabilty mode should be off, is that the case?

If you are using File:/// to refernce a local file it should work.

You could could try a free image hosting service such as tinypic.com

I've checked into this further.  My thought that the web browser was running on the method server is incorrect, as verified by loading www.whatismyip.com.  If the web page I wish to open is prefaced by either http://   or by just www.  it opens fine.  If I leave off the www.  for a real web address, I get a 404 error.   If I use the file:///  format,  I get the bad request response.

It appears the url I am sending is being blocked by method because it doesn't start with either www or http.

If so, can this be addressed please?  Also, can you open a local file with the file:/// format, loaded via the Load Web Page action?

Having this capability would be much easier than having to upload everything to a website first.

I'll update the ticket I created for this to include the Load Web Page action, but i'm not sure of a timeline when or if this would get implemented.
