Creating a dropdown field link to an existing table

I tried to create a field under "Customer". It is called ReferredBy (Note that if you use "Referred By" with a space it seems to allow it, but it won't let you go further, without actually saying error). In the dropdown I choose to pick an existing table. I think Customers or Contacts would be want I want for this, as I want to be able to link this field to any customer OR lead that has already been entered. However, on the next screen where it says to choose the text field that contains the choices, it is either blank or record ID. Record ID is just a number, so that's no good. If I pick something like users or lead source, there is the actual option of those on the next screen, but fields like customers, vendors, or contacts is blank. What am I doing wrong?

    Answer

    Hello theavspecialist,

If you create a dropdown field and use the selections from an existing table you can select the FullName field from the Customer or Entity tables. See my screenshot below. If you're still unable to see the FullName field when selecting the Customer or Entity tables then try regenerating your Customer table by clicking Edit Fields... then Finished Editing Fields.

    Answer

Another thing to add, if for any reason you have duplicate Entities (Customer/Vendor/Lead/OtherName), the FulName field will not be displayed as an option. So you would need to clear out the duplicates first.

I don't have the option for FullName. as you can see. You mention duplicates. Why would I have duplicates? From creating custom screens? The only edits I have done to the customer table is the addition of the yes/no fields like IsHVACCustomer, etc.

Export the following tables and search for duplicates names, if you find any then delete them in Method. *Note: If you have any transactions associated with them you won't be able to delete them.

    • Customer
    • Vendor
    • Employee
    • OtherName

If no duplicates exist please enable the MethodSupport user on your account, then email me your Company Account name, phone number, and best time to reach you. To enable the MethodSupport user go to Customize > Users > scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click the Active checkbox to enable it.

Correction: Export your Entity table and look for duplicates. It's possible there may be something missed if you export the 4 tables separately. Sorry about that.

Re: Creating a dropdown field link to an existing table

I do not have any tables that I can export that are named "Entity". Here's a shot of my options.

I could go through all customers manually? But that would take a lot of time. Is this a bug or something? Why would duplicates cause tables not to be allowed?

Hmm. My screen shot isn't showing up but the list contains account, activity, cmpaign, cases, class, customer, customer and customer lead, email template, employee, itemservice, listbuilder, opportunity, solution, tenant, vendor, vendor and vendor lead, and vendor lead.

That's a list of the common tables used in Method. When on the Import/Export Tool screen, you want to ensure that you disable the Show only comman tables? option. Once that's done you'll be able to select from any table in Method to export, including the Entity table.
