CreditCardNumber field - how is this used?

    Hey Guys,

We're looking to switch payment processors from QB to Paypal & wondering... how does the CreditCardNumber field work in the Customer table? Is this the number that will be used to process Paypal transactions? Is this data encrypted? Are there any limitations or rules to how this data is updated or retrieved via the API?

    Thanks in advance.

    Best,

    Charles

    Hello Charles,
Method does not store any credit card numbers.  You can enter a credit card number in the Method fields and it will be passed into Quickbooks with the sync.  If you enter the credit card number in Quickbooks, the credit card number will not be sent to Method.  There is an old forum post that explains the preferences you can set with Quickbooks in sending credit card info to Method.  See it here. [ http://www.methodintegration.com/cs/forums/t/3194.aspx ]

We have a PayPal help article that can answer your questions on using the payment system with Method.  See it here. [ http://www.methodintegration.com/method/kb.aspx?folder=methodcrm&article=PayPal-integration&id=334 ]

In regards to your encrypted question, credit cards numbers are only stored in Quickbooks.  If you change to a PayPal account, the payment is subject to its encryption systems.  In a manner of speaking, Method is only the gateway to your payment system and uses https protocol to secure data.

Lastly, any questions about the API, you should try the Method API Forum.

    Hey Greg,

Okay--just so I'm clear on this... when a credit card number is entered in Method, it essentially syncs back to QB and is removed from the Method database? I entered one yesterday and it was available, all digits, as much as 15 minutes after entering but I think my sync manager may have been on pause. Just wanted to confirm.

    Charles

    Answer

    Hello,

When you enter the credit card number in Method, it is stored temporarily until the sync happens.  Once the sync occurs, Quickbooks will get the credit card number.  It will then send either a blank number or X'd out number back to Method.  This depends on your setting in Quickbooks, summarized below from another forum post.

Your credit card number is staying around because the sync has not occurred or the information on the Method screen hasn't refreshed.  Try refreshing the page or logging out and in if the credit card number is still there after a sync.

    • Inside QuickBooks, under Edit > Preferences > Integrated Applications > Company Preferences
    • Select the Method Integration Engine (MIE) for use with QuickBooks and click properties
    • Under the Access Rights tab, the last checkbox is to Allow this application access to SSN, CC numbers etc..
      • If the box is checked then QB will always return the CC number as xxxx0000 with the last 4 digits (and it'll keep the last 4 digits updated if you make changes later)
      • If the box is un-checked then QB will send nothing back to Method.  Method can send the info to QB but QB will wipe it out and blank out that field for us.  "
