Having trouble inputting names into e-mail

I'm having issues with the inputting names into the e-mails.  I did exactly with the steps provided in the template of:

Type in your merge fields in a TableName.FieldName format.  So if you wanted to have an email start with "Dear Bob," you would type in "Dear Customer.FirstName,".   If you wanted to sign your email with the user's signature, you would finish it with "Users.EmailSignature".

I'm putting this into the e-mail:

    Hi Customer.FirstName,

But this comes up in our test:

    Quote from InstaDRY

    Hi Customer.FirstName,

It's obviously not taking and the direction. I must be doing something wrong.  Any help?

    Hi InstaDRY,

I will get back to you with a more detailed response but for now try using ListBuilder.FirstName rather than Customer.FirstName. Hope this helps - I am assuming you are encountering this problem in List Builder emails.

    Hi Noel,

It seems to not work like that as well.

    Hi,

Can you detail the steps you are taking please?

I can hopefully then pinpoint the source of the problem.

    Hi Noel,

I've tried copying and pasting as well as typing it in as well.  Do I need to get tech support on this?

    Hi InstaDRY,

What screen are you sending this email from?

So far I have tested sending emails from List Builder using (ListBuilder.FirstName) and the Activities screen (Customer.FirstName) and both have pulled in the correct information - First Name.

    Hi,

Unlike the Activity or Listbuilder screens, the Work Order screen does not have the character functions to replace the merge field with the intended values (customer name in this instance).

To achieve this, some customization is required. I recommend you look at the Activity email actions and use similar actions for the work order.

Ok, I can see that will take some work for now.  How about if we tailor ourselves to the invoice screen?  Will what we want to achieve work?  I.E. adding the start time (arrival time) on the invoice screen and put it into the e-mail, using the names and signatures, as well as creating a follow-up/thank you e-mail button in the screen.
