    Need a simple high-level step-by-step checklist to add a field to Lead, Contact, and Customer

    I have existing database of thousands of leads, with a number of custom fields, to import.  As most of my leads are individuals (only one contact per lead), I want these custom fields on the Lead page in addition to the contact pages.  They also need to be retained when the lead becomes a customer.

    Example fields:

    • Skype Address (50 character text field)
    • G+ Address (255 character text field)
    • LinkedIn Industry (ideally a pick list, else a 50 character text field)
    • LinkedIn Location (ideally a pick list, else a 50 character text field)
    • LinkIn Connection (Yes, No)
    • Type of Lead (ideally a pick list such as Sales, Recruiter, Executive, Manager, Staff)
     
    So, what tables and screens to I need to update?  While I may have missed it, I could not find a step-by-step instruction or checklist to explain how to add a field.

    Hi Matthew,

    We spoke on the phone. We'll use LinkedInConnection as our example field. 

    First thing you want to do is add the field to your Entity table. Next, you can link your LinkedInConnection field to the Contacts table. To do so, click Edit Fields... on your Contacts table and choose Add a Linked Field (see my screenshot below). Now that we have the fields and tables set up, the next phase of your customization project should be to edit the appropriate screens. You'll probably need to add the new field to the New Lead screen, and the new linked field into the Edit Contact screen. Now, when you enter and save data in your new lead screen, it should automatically link to the main contact of the lead.
